Copacabana waterfront and bay

Copacabana

At the end of Avenida 6 de Agosto, five blocks from the square, the town opens onto the lake: it is one of the highest beaches in the world (3,841 m above sea level) and the boarding port for the islands, run by the Port Captaincy of the Bolivian Navy. Here you rent pedal boats and kayaks, eat trout, kingfish and native fish at the beach stalls and wait for sunset. A few minutes away by boat is the Boca del Sapo, an Aymara shrine known as the wishing rock.

The water is 10 to 14 °C: for paddling, not swimming. Sunset is between 17:30 and 18:30 depending on the season; bring a warm layer. Island boat tickets are sold at the pier on the day. Wear sunscreen even when cloudy. Do not consume products from the Titicaca giant frog, a protected species.
